‘Camp for us is about growth, not comfort, and I think the players embrace that,’ the head coach says while singling out the maturity in the quarterback room
LOS ANGELES — On the last day of fall practice for the UCLA football team, head coach Chip Kelly emphasized the importance of growth and how his team has progressed from Day One.
Kelly echoed that sentiment when it came to the quarterback room and the competition that’s taken place between redshirt juniors Ethan Garbers and Collin Schlee, redshirt freshman Justyn Martin and true freshman Dante Moore for the starting spot. While the freshmen quarterbacks have shown a propensity for picking up the offense quickly, the veterans of the group, Garbers and Schlee, bring a level of experience and maturity that helps their case.
“He’s been exactly what we thought he was. He’s a really, really talented player that’s got a lot of experience and a lot of snaps underneath his belt and really has a unique skill set,” Kelly said about Schlee. “Can really run, has got a strong arm and is a really talented player, so I’ve been really impressed with him.”
Regardless of who takes the reins come Sept. 2, the support will be there for whoever ends up in the huddle first.
