A Chinese official described the conflict in Ukraine as a 'war' for the first time.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that he hoped the war would end as soon as possible, a remark made after Chinese leaders have avoided condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
"We hope to see fighting and the war stop as soon as possible," Wang said in a conference call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, according to the state-owned China Central Television. Wang also called for all parties involved to calm down and do all they can to prevent escalation, the outlet reported.China has avoided condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, declaring the neighboring nation to be its chief"strategic partner.
Pentagon officials claimed on Friday that China gave Putin"tacit approval" as the CCP attempted to blame the Russian invasion on the United States and NATO.China has been presented as a possible mediator in the war despite these attempts to shift blame from Russia. A top EU official invited China on Saturday to act as a mediator between Ukraine and Russia.
