China announced that it would begin sending humanitarian aid to Ukraine amid Russia's invasion.

The donation, which is less than $800,000, will be provided by the Red Cross Society of China in what appears to be a barely notable effort in comparison to humanitarian efforts made by the rest of the world.

"At the request of the Ukrainian side, the Red Cross Society of China will provide a batch of humanitarian aid ... including food and daily necessities, worth 5 million yuan ," Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Wednesday.China announced the provisions a day after Chinese President Xi Jinping said that he was"deeply grieved" by the invasion as more than 2.2 million refugees attempt to leave war-torn Ukraine.

While China's donations will be appreciated, they seem minuscule compared to other countries. China's neighbor, South Korea, agreed on Feb. 28 to send $10 million humanitarian aid to help Ukraine. Israel said on March 1 that it is providing 100 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees. Several celebrities have also made donations larger than China to help Ukraine. Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling promised to match donations to the U.K. charity Lumos up to 1 million pounds. Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher raised $18 million in donations through GoFundMe. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds also pledged to match donations up to $1 million to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees.
