The Chinese government announced today it would yank the press credentials for reporters of major U.S. news outlets

The move comes weeks after the White House moved to limit the number of Chinese citizens who could work in the U.S. for several Chinese state-controlled outlets and ordered them to register as foreign missions. The foreign ministry admitted in Tuesday's statement that the moves are retaliatory, calling the Trump administration's restrictions “expulsion in all but name.”

In addition to the three U.S. outlets facing expulsion, Chinese authorities announced that two more U.S. news organizations — Voice of America and Time Magazine — will be designated as “foreign missions” and required to turn over information regarding their “staff, finance, operation and real estate in China.”

Tensions between the global superpowers, already at a peak due to ongoing trade disputes, have spiked in recent months in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The disease, which originated in Wuhan, China at the end of last year, has now spread across the globe and in the past several weeks has forced U.S. leaders to take drastic measures in an effort to contain the spread of the virus.
