As auto manufacturers prepare to boost production of electric vehicles across Canadian markets, skeptics wonder if Saskatchewan is ready.
Saskatchewan has around 40 publicly accessible supercharger stations, or Level 3 chargers, and even more chargers are popping up for customer use at car dealerships, hotels and businesses.Malcolm Lucy, president of Saskatoon-based advocate group SaskEV, also slid into his Tesla Model 3 in 2018.
The presence of battery-powered vehicles actually grew quite sharply between 2020 and 2021, increasing by over 48 per cent, nationally.. Five years ago, there were only 45 battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, registered in the province. Ten years ago, that number was just five., the first and only of its kind in Canada, there were just over 400 EVs.
Manufacturing delays in the past year are also hindering inventory, and Pointer said the Saskatchewan dealers that do sell EVs emptied their stock in the boom last spring when gas prices soared, including demo vehicles.Article content “The cost per mile on these is by far the cheapest option,” said Pointer. “When gasoline hit $2 plus per litre, all of the electric cars anywhere in Western Canada essentially sold out overnight, because people had finally had enough.”Article content
The average gasoline vehicle, according to Natural Resources Canada, uses around $1,900 in fuel per year. Meanwhile, range anxiety remains a top concern, but it has a simple solution: beef up the number of charging stations and think about “fuelling” differently. “It’s just a matter of the infrastructure catching up to support this transition,” said Lucy. “It’ll happen — it’s a matter of how long it will take.”
