Chicago schools will get $150 million more next year to increase spending per pupil and target investments toward schools with the most need.
Pedro Martinez, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, speaks at City Hall on Jan. 5, 2022.
Using federal emergency funds provided during the COVID-19 pandemic, officials said in a news briefing Tuesday that CPS will provide district-managed schools an additional $150 million in the 2023-24 school year, to increase spending per pupil for all students and target investments toward schools with the most need. With federal dollars set to expire in 2025, however, CPS CEO Pedro Martinez said he has big hopes for working with Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson.
Focusing on students’ needs makes for a more equitable district, Martinez said. “We have an obligation to ensure that we have an equitable student experience in CPS across the board — no matter where they live, no matter how large or small their school may be, or what their race, we’ll continue to prioritize communities where additional resources are required to meet those student needs,” he said.
