It is rare for a whole case to be sealed from public view, experts said, especially one involving government agencies.
The Chicago Park District has filed a motion attempting to seal a lawsuit involving allegations that Mayor Lori Lightfoot berated a lawyer and used obscene language in a Zoom call over a Christopher Columbus statue — an unusual move that would keep the public in the dark about the case.
The Park District’s motion to seal the case acknowledges a Zoom call occurred involving high-ranking city lawyers Celia Meza and John Hendricks, then-Park Board President Avis LaVelle and parks Chief Operating Officer Patrick Levar, as well as Smyrniotis, who was the Park District’s deputy general counsel, and then-general counsel Timothy King.
“If I was the judge sitting on this case, the fact that it is a fight between public entities would give me even more pause before I put a blanket on the whole thing,” Rathsack said. Park District spokeswoman Michele Lemons in a statement said the district “took the necessary steps to protect matters covered by the attorney-client privilege” but she did not address questions about the public’s interest in the case.
