Cheapest supermarket named as 'posh' retailer undercuts ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons
The UK's cheapest supermarket for March has been named by consumer experts Which? The cheapest supermarket is now only 25p cheaper than Lidl - but a whopping £20 less than the most expensive supermarket, Waitrose.
A basket of 41 grocery items at Aldi cost £72.54 on average across the month, compared with £92.55 at Waitrose and £72.79 at Lidl, Which? Found. A comparison of 137 items – the original 41 as well as another 96 including branded products such as Andrex toilet paper and Cathedral City cheese, and not including Aldi and Lidl, found Asda was the cheapest, costing £343.91.
The watchdog said retailers should be helping customers by making sure affordable basic ranges were available in all branches, including smaller convenience stores, as well as improving unit pricing on all products to allow customers to easily work out the best value.
