It’s worth noting that some awards ceremonies, such as the Grammys and the MTV Movie and TV Awards, have already gone gender-neutral, no longer handing out awards in Best Male or Best Female categories. When Emma Watson won the first gender-neutral MTV Award for acting in 2017, she accepted the award with the words, “The only distinction should be between each outstanding performance.” Nonetheless, the elimination of gendered awards still seems out of reach for more traditional Hollywood awards ceremonies, though, such as the Emmys and the Oscars.
It makes sense that Theron, whose oldest daughter, Jackson, is transgender, might understand the importance of awarding actors based on talent rather than gender identity, but getting the rest of Hollywood on board may prove challenging.over the past few years, that push for diversity came only after it was revealed in 2016 that 92% of Oscars voters were white and 75% were male.—not a generation that’s always receptive to the concept of doing away with gender norms.
