Apparently the seventh time is the charm. That’s how many nominations it took for Chaka Khan (as a solo artist or with her old band Rufus) to finally get through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s doors.
Chaka Khan performing at The Apollo Theater in Harlem, in 1992. CLEVELAND, Ohio - Apparently the seventh time is the charm. That’s how many nominations it took for Chaka Khan to finally get through the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s doors. Khan will be inducted into the Rock Hall’s Class of 2023 in the Music Excellence category this November in ceremonies at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Khan is often called “The Queen of Funk,” a title she personally finds limiting but it is no less true. Khan is also one of the queens of R&B, pop crossover, jazz and a platinum-dipped dash of disco and dance diva thrown in for good measure. The Chicago native first gained fame using her huge, dynamic voice as the frontwoman of Rufus, the funky 1970s band that had hits with Stevie Wonder’s “Tell Me Something Good,” and “Do You Love What You Feel.
Two years later, she returned to pop music in a big way with the multiplatinum 1984 crossover album, “I Feel For You.” The album featured the title track, a Prince cover that not only made Khan a true pop star but was also one of the first hit pop songs mixing the contemporary sound of computerized funk and pop and a rap from Grandmaster Melle Mel.
Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Khan kept her sound contemporary with her own records and memorable appearances on peers’ recordings, including Steve Winwood’s “Higher Love” and the Grammy-winning version of “I’ll Be Good To You,” featuring Ray Charles. All totaled, in her 50 years of music, Khan has earned 10 Grammys, sold millions of albums and is frequently name-checked as an influential singer and woman by generations of young artists.
