“The key is matching people’s interests and abilities to their potential employment, and that’s what I think we can do,” explained Dr. Howard Rosen, owner of Hempfield Behavioral Health and the founder of the Hempfield HUBS program.

“Hempfield HUBS is conducted 100 percent in the Perry County community with a home base at Stone House Farm and Inn,” said Deborah Shaffer, development officer with HBH. “The program encourages relationships and networks that provide friendship and support, hobbies/interests that promote health and wellness, and exploration of recreational and vocational interests.

“You can see that the setting exerts a lot of control over how you behave,” Rosen said. “That was true in her case. When she was doing things she really enjoyed, no problems. At home there were a lot of rules and demands and poor treatment. She could give it as good as she could take it, so she was giving them a run for their money. Once I saw the farm, the light bulb went off for me.”

Stone House Farm and Inn is the result of career counselors from all four Perry County school districts hearing about the success of Red Tomato Farm and taking a tour in 2020. They were impressed and contacted Rosen to see if it would be possible to bring a similar program to Perry County. He immediately was interested and searched for suitable properties. He found Stone House Farm and ended up purchasing it after that first conversation.
