The U.S. Customs and Border Protection said officers detained a tractor-trailer driver who attempted to smuggle more than 3.5 million fentanyl pills into California.

"On Monday, at approximately 7:21 p.m., CBP officers encountered a 48-year-old male driver of a tractor-trailer, with a shipment manifested as green beans. During the initial inspection, a CBP officer referred the driver and cargo load for an intensive agriculture inspection," the statement read. CBP said officers at the Otay Mesa port of entry found 3,520,000 fentanyl pills during an inspection on Monday evening, April 17, 2023.
