Young people have said it’s been difficult to find counselling in Sask., adding a hospital stay may not be the best option in some cases.
Davidson said he’s had difficulties accessing counselling for anxiety and depression because there is an overflow of people trying to receive such services.
However, youth are still sent to hospital even though there could be better alternatives. This often puts tremendous pressure on emergency rooms, said children’s advocate Lisa Broda. Throughout her youth, Epp said, life may have been easier if she had those supports readily available, particularly at school.
He said there’s no further support when people leave the hospital, adding it’s common to face stigma. “We need to be able to provide and fill in that space where a child or a youth might not be in need of safe intensive therapy and services, but they clearly are struggling with some mental health issues,” he said.
As a result, some youth are kept on an inpatient unit longer than would be required because their family is unable to support them or they have nowhere else to go.“When it comes to addictions treatment, young people face significant barriers to accessing services and for extreme cases, this is true when there is only one secure detox location in the province,” Broda said.
