Carnival employees reveal what they really think of CEO Arnold Donald as the cruise industry is brought to its knees by coronavirus
A Princess Cruises sales employee said Donald has innovative ideas about how to find new customers, citing the
Carnival has created and the company's Ocean Medallion device, which allows for faster boarding on some Princess ships, among other features. The employee also complimented Donald's performance in recent months, saying he has frequently communicated with the company's workforce and has not been afraid to answer difficult questions during television interviews.'I feel like his phrasing has removed his ownership of the problem'A Carnival Corp.
The former employee said Donald is eloquent and candid when talking to employees, and, when giving feedback, makes employees feel proud of the work they've done."I've seen him do public interviews in the last few weeks saying, 'Well, cruise lines didn't start the virus and we're safe. You could social distance on a ship.' Have you ever been on a cruise ship? You can't social distance on a cruise ship.
When asked about Carnival's response to the coronavirus, Donald's "snap reaction is, 'The cruise industry didn't start this virus. It's not our fault.' Well, we've had the biggest outbreaks in the world on our cruise ships, so maybe we didn't start it, but what are you doing about it? And he doesn't have an answer," the salesperson said.
"Arnold, from my view of the company, has done just a phenomenal job of communicating externally but, more importantly, internally," a Carnival Corp. senior executive said, citing the videos and podcasts he has recorded for Carnival employees. "He really has been truly exceptional and a world-class leader.""Arnold's a great leader," said a former executive who oversaw multiple Carnival brands during his time at the company.
