Both parties are turning their attention to Latino voters, a group whose vote has been consistently 'taken for granted,' according to one expert.
PUBLISHED 4:53 PM CDT Aug. 19, 2022WASHINGTON — Hispanic voters are emerging as a major battleground in this year’s elections up and down the ballot. Ahead of the midterm elections, candidates from both parties are ramping up outreach to Latino communities. Peeling these voters away from Democrats is a key part of the GOP’s game plan to become the majority party in the U.S. House. But the Democratic Party is vowing to not take Hispanic voters for granted.
A group of Democrats from North Texas is investing in a program to test and determine the most effective strategies to increase turnout among Hispanic voters, particularly focusing on local and state level races.“A big chunk of the community is under 18, and then you also have eligibility where you have legal permanent residents who are not yet citizens that are becoming citizens at a regular rate,” Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, said to Capital Tonight.
“The Latino vote is really in its infancy. You see how the Latino vote in states like Nevada and Arizona and New Mexico delivered the White House to President [Joe] Biden, but in other parts of the United States, including in our state of Texas, there’s been, you know, on a relative basis, very little outreach,” he said. “What we want to do is prove up which strategies are the most effective, and then start to scale those up.
“Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel is making the investments necessary so that we can have meaningful dialogue, so that we can make authentic relationships and so that we can grow our party for the long term.
