OTTAWA - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are in self-isolation after she fell ill and was tested for the new coronavirus, while school was canceled in Ontario to limit the spread of the outbreak.
With the Canadian dollar at a four-year low against its U.S. counterpart and stocks plunging globally, the Bank of Canada announced the expansion of its bond buyback and term repo operations to inject liquidity into the market. “Having recently returned from a speaking engagement in London, UK, the prime minister’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau began exhibiting mild flu-like symptoms including a low fever late last night,” the prime minister’s office said.
Indigenous Services Minister Marc Miller said Trudeau’s was “a precautionary measure, and should Canadians find themselves in a similar situation, that is the recommendation.” Quebec said it had 13 cases. It has banned all indoor events with more than 250 people and said people returning from any foreign country should self-isolate for 14 days. Health and education public sector workers who travel abroad will be required to self-isolate.
