Democratic candidates like Maine’s Chloe Maxmin are trying to win races in rural parts of the country that the party has treated as a lost cause.

“Democrats like to take spreadsheets to knife fights,” she says of climate change conversations. “We like to show up with our data and say, ‘This is what you should believe!’ When we treat people like idiots, they’re going to back in a corner and say, ‘I’m not going to agree with them.’ But when you show up and have conversations, that’s when you change hearts and minds.”

And these talks are helping her craft climate policy that can help rural populations: Last year, Maxmin introduced a Green New Deal bill for Maine that was the first state-level Green New Deal to be endorsed by a state AFL-CIO chapter. ItSome of the most promising signs that the Democratic Party is starting to listen and support rural voters come from the younger branches of the party.

The strategy marked a shift for the organization. “In the past, plans were kind of focusing just on campuses because that’s where our base is,” Walther says. “But we’re only going to win if we expand.”
