Fearing a global recession, Indonesia is seeking trade and investment partnerships with other Asian countries including China. DW's Arti Ekawati reports on the possible negative consequences of close economic ties with Beijing.
Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and hopes to chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2023. Indonesia also hosts the G20 summit in November.
On Wednesday, Widodo continued to Japan for talks with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Widodo expressed condolences for the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, lauding the late Japanese leader's efforts to improve strategic relations with Indonesia. Joining Widodo on the tour is Indonesia's minister of state-owned enterprises, Erick Thohir, the head of the investment coordinating board , Bahlil Lahadalia, as well as high-ranking business tycoons.Veronika S. Saraswati, an expert on China studiesof the Jakarta-based think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies , said Indonesia was prioritizing increasing its strategic and economic partnerships with China.
