Tolls have been in place at the Birkenhead and Wallasey tunnels since they were opened
For the last two decades, a man has fought to scrap something that's been part of Merseyside life for nearly 90 years.
For the last twenty years, John McGoldrick, a 77 year-old from Greasby, has been campaigning to abolish them. Mr McGoldrick is part of the Scrap Mersey Tolls group. A former accountant for Liverpool City Council, he joined the group in 2003. “Despite various information requests, they do their best to fob you off and cloud the issue. They're making the profits but they don't want you to know how much.”
“So new businesses will tend to set up in other areas. It's an economic disadvantage. To a certain extent, it’s divided communities. The focus of Scrap Mersey Tolls has changed over the last twenty years. The changing of its name from the Mersey Tunnels Users Association shows its increased focus on the charges present at the Runcorn - Widnes bridges.
John is also dismissive of a compromise where the tolls were kept in exchange for improvements to public transport in the area. Mr McGoldrick said: “I’m a driver and occasionally use public transport.
