Gov. Gavin Newsom discussed the efforts on Wednesday and noted that 2.7 million Californians have filed for unemployment benefits in the last month amid the coronavirus pandemic.
AdvertisementNewsom’s comments came a day after state Labor Secretary Julie Su announced that a new online portal would be created in the next two weeks allowing independent contractors, gig workers and the self-employed to file documents to obtain benefits.
Su said the state Employment Development Department needed two weeks to get the new portal up and running.“We know that what you need is the money in your pocket,” Su said in a Facebook Live chat on Tuesday. “We are working to make sure that you receive your payments within 24 to 48 hours after you apply. In order to do that, we need two weeks to make that system live, to test it, to ensure that it is working.”The state Employment Development Department has received a record 2.
