Despite early progress in flattening the curve, the country’s most populous state may soon have the most confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S.
“I don’t myself overread into the significance of that number. I look at everyday as an opportunity to do more and do better without response to Covid-19 and I really expect and hope that California is gonna be the state that adapted the most, learned the most, prepared the best.” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of California’s Department of Health and Human Services, during a press conference Tuesday.
California isn’t the only state seeing a surge in cases. Florida, Arizona, Louisiana and South Carolina are among several states in the south and western parts of the U.S. experiencing large outbreaks after reopening their economies in late-May and June. Nearly all have rolled back reopening plans or issued statewide mask mandates.
