Opinion: California needs to show prison reform data
These very much include Gov. Gavin Newsom’s various plans to safely reduce the prison population, knowing as we all do that time behind bars for some offenders, especially the very young, merely amounts to a spell in schools for scoundrels rather than any real rehabilitation for reentry into society.
It’s not that what numbers we do have don’t show movement in the reform efforts, including this crucial one to successfully transition ex-cons into the community and the workforce. Even the numbers of people involved in the program are in dispute. While the department’s annual report said there 17,650 participants, a department spokesperson later told CalMatters the program served 9,516 people, a number later revised to 8,213. That’s a huge difference in important statistics. Which number is correct? Why isn’t it easier to say?
