California wins two straight NCS boys basketball games for the first time in school history.
SAN RAMON — Before Friday night, California High had never won two consecutive North Coast Section tournament games.
California and the third seed, visits No. 2 Moreau, a 61-45 winner over Bishop O’Dowd on Tuesday night in a semifinal game. Sixth-seeded Liberty, which fell behind early against California, rallied gamely and could never quite catch up, ends its season at 22-6. The Grizzlies led by as much as 15 points at 45-30 with 3:27 left in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Gray. Not that California coach Steve Ohlmeyer felt all that comfortable. The Grizzlies and Lions played in a season opening “foundation” game which didn’t count in terms of won-loss records, and they’ve also faced off in summer competitions.
Liberty coach Jon Heinz said his team didn’t press as well as it usually does and felt his squad simply fell too far behind.
