Gene Ransom, a member of the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame, was shot and killed while driving on Interstate 880 in Oakland, according toRansom was driving near the Broadway exit on Interstate 880 about 5:15 p.m. Friday when he was shot, causing him to veer his Honda sedan and crash into a guardrail, the California Highway Patrol said.

Ransom is considered"one of the great point guards in Cal history," leading the team in assists all three seasons he played from 1975-76 to 1977-78, and averaging 17 points a game during the 1977-78 season. Ransom is probably best remembered as having played 63.5 minutes and scoring 36 points in a five-overtime victory against Oregon in 1977.
The incident was among several freeway shootings in Oakland. Last month, an Alameda County sheriff’s recruit who was fatally shot on Interstate 580 on Jan. 4 as he drove home from the academy. Authorities said David V. Nguyen, 28, was set to graduate from the academy this month.
