It has been reported that Chancellor Jeremy Hunt and Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch are resistant to the move for fears it could damage the economy and trade, while Mr Dowden andA source close to Ms Badenoch refused to say whether she would back putting China in the enhanced tier, suggesting she favoured a more targeted approach.
While parliamentary security services intercepted Chinese-linked attempts to carry out surveillance on MPs and peers’ email accounts, some of those attacked claimed they had separately been targeted by agents attempting to impersonate them in conversations with other global politicians, and were contacted by people claiming to be British ministers such as Tom Tugendhat.
Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, who announced the measures in a Commons statement, said: “The UK will not tolerate malicious cyber activity targeting our democratic institutions.”, one of the MPs targeted by hackers, suggested the limited sanctions announced by the UK in response to the cyber attacks were “like an elephant giving birth to a mouse”.
He said: “We must now enter a new era of relations with China, dealing with the contemporary Chinese Communist Party as it really is, not as we would wish it to be. Earlier, Sir Iain used a press conference to reveal he had been targeted by a “wolf warrior” agent impersonating him in conversations with global politicians and claiming he recanted his views on Beijing.
