Small business owners have spent thousands after burglary incidents.
“We strengthened our alarm system,” Schuster said of business owners around the city. “The deterrents we put into place during the pandemic are still there. We’re more fortified than we’ve ever been.”
While the decline of burglaries is a positive sign, especially after the challenging pandemic years, Schuster said that it doesn’t diminish the stress it creates for small business owners. “Everyone is still walking around in a heightened sense of alertness and it's exhausting,” he said.following two back-to-back vandalism events in June. The August incident resulted in a damaged entrance and two stolen cash registers.
Owner Jaynry Mak later secured her restaurant entrance with plywood already stored inside the restaurant from the prior June events. Mak previously told SFGATE that she estimated the damages made in August would cost her about $5,000 to fix. “As a community, it has been really difficult,” Mak told SFGATE. “I grew up in this city. A lot of businesses in Chinatown have gates and plywood now. It has never been this bad. … Mentally and emotionally, we’re over it.”
