A 109-year-old Eastside landmark is getting a new lease on life as workforce housing and artist studios plus restaurant, retail and office space.
When completed, the warehouse apartments and businesses will be easily accessible to many of the downtown employment centers, Baynes also said.Ryan Akin, development manager for Columbia Ventures, said construction is moving forward on schedule after beginning Sept. 1. They have a 22-month construction schedule so the renovated warehouse should be ready to open in Summer 2024, he said.
“This is a building built without any internal hallways. There are 13 external elevators that were those old school variety where you have wood gates that you pull up and pull down,” Baynes said."We’re going to preserve one of them as an artifact of the past while bringing the building up to modern fire and life safety codes.”
Baynes said they were drawn to the project for multiple reasons, including its location near downtown and Hogans Creek — the waterway slated to become“We wanted to be part of the vision that Jacksonville city leadership has for downtown,” said Baynes, citing as “very compelling” the planned Emerald Trail crossing the warehouse property.
“It’s just a really unique building. There is nothing like it anywhere else in Jacksonville. It's irreplicable, just really special,” Akin said.
