Priefer had been with the Browns since 2019.
Priefer is the second coordinator fired by the Browns this offseason, following in the footsteps of defensive coordinator Joe Woods, who was fired the night of the regular season finale in Pittsburgh. Woods was hired by the Saints as coordinator.
Petzing, the Browns former quarterbacks coach, left to take the offensive coordinator job in Arizona under new coach Jon Gannon. Jeff Howard took the linebackers coach position with the Chargers, and Chris Kiffin took the linebackers coach spot with the Texans. The latter two were lateral moves, meaning the Browns likely informed them they were free to seek other jobs.
The Browns special teams ranked 18th in the NFL according to NFL writer Rick Gosselin’s annual rankings, but were particularly poor in a several areas, including punt coverage. They were last in the NFL in that category at 12.3 yards per opponent return. The Browns also failed to return onside kicks twice, including once in the meltdown against the Jets in Week 2.
