Jason Hughes wants an appeals court to reverse a judge’s decision not to dismiss him from city lawsuits.
While lawyers for the city of San Diego push ahead with civil claims against real estate broker Jason Hughes, the former mayoral adviser is asking a state appeals court to reverse a judge’s decision not to throw out the two cases.
The legal maneuver came after Superior Court Judge Timothy Taylor last month refused to dismiss Hughes from two lawsuits filed by the city.Hughes has been accused by city officials of illegally collecting fees on the leases he helped negotiate in 2015 and 2016. He and landlord Cisterra Development remain under criminal investigation by the District Attorney’s Office, which executed multiple search warrants related to the transactions last year.
“Hughes’s repeated and documented disclosures are bolstered by the city’s sworn admissions in discovery,” the appeal states. “The city waited more than four years after the transaction at issue to file a complaint for violations of California Government Code section 1090,” the Hughes legal team wrote.
