On July 14, Holliday will return to Cleveland for the first time in nearly 20 years during a free, live event at the Music Box Supper Club. Holliday will speak on the long career that took off in Cleveland and turned him into a sportscasting legend.

Holliday, 84, was born and raised in Miami, Fla. After high school, he moved to Perry, Ga. to work at his grandfather’s drug store. It was there Holliday was discovered by an employee at local radio station WBBN.

Holliday moved back to Miami where he landed a job at R&B station WFEC at the age of 18. The owners took to Holliday and tapped him to help lead their new station, WVRM, in Rochester, N.Y. “Cain Park had a summer series where they would bring in major stars to take leading roles in musicals,” Holliday recalls. “I was at a party one night and a guy named Jerry Leonard who ran Cain Park summer theater there said, ‘Johnny, have you ever done any acting?’ I had done high school theater. And Jerry said, ‘We’re doing a summer series and I think you’d be perfect.”

In 1962, the job of public address announcer for the Cleveland Browns opened. Wanting the job, Holliday called the Browns’ main switchboard and asked to speak to team owner Art Modell.
