Officials say swapping out residency certificates for a TIE card could make airport travel less stressful.
Brits who live abroad in Spain are being urged to switch to a new travel document if they want to "avoid disruption" at airport border security.
Prior to Brexit, UK nationals living in Spain were given two forms of residency certificate - either in an A4 or green, wallet sized document. Now, Brits living in Spain can opt for a Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero - a special biometric card for UK nationals in Spain that proves their rights to work and live under the Withdrawal Agreement between the EU and UK.
"We are working with the Spanish Government and the EU to prepare for the implementation of this new scheme and we have requested that more TIE appointments are made available." UK nationals looking to apply for a TIE must submit their residence application either in person or electronically to their local immigration office. Applicants can find more information and necessary forms on the Gov.uk website.
