Millions were treated to a rare celestial event as the Aurora Borealis lit up the night sky in a myriad of colours on Saturday
Brits might have another chance to see yet another spectacular Northern Lights display as an expert reveals a solar storm could fire one Earth's way "at almost any time."
Lancaster University physics professor Jim Wild told the Mirror a fresh display could not be ruled out. "The Sun remains very active and it could fire another coronal mass ejection earthward at almost any time," he said."At the moment, we know there is at least one more heading in our direction, but it's not yet clear how whether it will hit Earth and if it does it's unlikely to have as powerful an impact as the one that arrived on Friday.
Professor Wild's remarks resonate with those of Greenwich Museums astronomer Greg Brown, who recently noted, "there are signs of another storm approaching within the next few days." However, he cautioned that predicting a solar storm is nearly impossible to do with precision. The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, become visible when solar particles collide with the Earth's magnetic field and are drawn towards the poles. These interactions with the atmosphere release energy as colourful light displays.
