Only 350 of the estimated 2,000 stolen items have been recovered.
The British Museum was the victim of an "inside job" when an estimated 2,000 artefacts were stolen over a period of around 20 years, its chair of trustees George Osborne has said.
In August the museum said a member of staff had been sacked after items, including gold jewellery, semi-precious stones and glass, dated from the 15th Century BC to the 19th Century AD had been taken from a storeroom. Adding that records had been changed to cover-up the thefts, which he said took place over a "20 to 25-year period".
“There is a task of dealing with unregistered objects, there are about a million of those," he told the panel.Credit: British Museum
