While overnight temperatures would normally plunge as low as -10°C at Le Praz De Lys, on New Year’s Eve they rose as high as 16°C.
In Switzerland, New Year temperatures hit a record 20°C, the highest ever recorded north of the Alps in January, with the resort of Adelboden – sitting at 2,000m – having to import a snow cannon to spread artificial snow in order to hold the World Cup from 6 January.Colder weather is on the way, though, with the temperatures expected to reach as low as -3°C by Monday at Praz De Lys.
The Ski Club Of Great Britain has reported that the critical freezing line now hovers between 2,000m and 2,500m, with higher resorts mainly unaffected.
