As of Thursday, fishing crews had caught 53.3 million fish since the beginning of the sockeye salmon run in Alaska’s Bristol Bay, which far outpaces the previous record catch of 44.3 million set in 1995.
Salmon processors in the Bristol Bay region have so far largely been able to keep pace with the huge harvest as their workers, many on 16-hour shifts, produce head and gutted fish, fillets, roe and other products.
Workers process sockeye salmon at the Trident seafood processing plant in North Naknek on Thursday, July 14, 2022. The Bristol Bay harvest typically peaks in early July. This year, two weeks into July, the harvest has continued strong.
