As part of that conversation, Hogsett must make clear how his vision for a third term best serves a city that is 29% Black. The mayor fumbled such questions in 2019 and there is even more pressure now to get them right. “Robin is implicitly running for a reason,” the person said. “She’s going to have to come up with all the policy stuff. She’s going to have to raise money. It’s going to be an uphill battle. She could be done before the primary. Basically, I think the way the community is going to respond, is we need a Black person to run, we need a Black person to step forward. They haven’t stepped forward. You can’t have a Black mayor if nobody steps forward.
“We don't know the future of Mayor Hogsett, if he's running or not,” Shackleford said when I asked her about taking on Hogsett. “I don't want to determine and I don't want to say if he should or should not get into the race. But I will say, as far as me and my team, I'm here to give a choice to those Democrats and to make sure that people have the opportunity to have that choice and be heard.
