Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan reveals she auditioned for the role of Robin in StrangerThings season 3.
Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan revealed that she auditioned for a major role on Netflix's Stranger Things before landing a role in the Shondaland hit. While today Coughlan is best known as Penelope Featherington in the soapy Netflix drama, the Irish actress was grinding through the entertainment circuit long before that. After years of auditioning and working in the theatre, Coughlan was cast in a recurring role on Derry Girls.
Netflix clearly became a fan of Coughlan's, announcing in 2019 that she was joining the cast of Shonda Rhimes' very first streaming series Bridgerton. Based on the best-selling books of the same name by Julia Quinn, the show centers on the fierce world of Regency-era London's ton during debutant season. Coughlan's Penelope became a standout as she navigated her nouveau-riche family and attempted to find her own love.
"I auditioned for Stranger Things a number of years ago... I auditioned to play Robin, Maya Hawke got it. She was far better than I ever would have been." Though Robin was introduced in Stranger Things season 3, she quickly earned her place as a fan favorite. The quirky, dry-witted former classmate turned co-worked of Steve Harrington proved invaluable to the show's core characters. While Coughlan wanted the role at the time, she went on to say that it was overall a good lesson to learn. She said watching Hawke on season 3 showed her that not getting a part wasn't personal. It was clearly Hawke's role and not hers.
Coughlan isn't the only now-successful star to reveal a longing to play Robin in Stranger Things. In fact, CODA star Emilia Jones recently admitted that she got very close to clinching the role. In both cases, everything worked out the way it should. While it's certainly fun to imagine Coughlan sassing Steve at Scoops Ahoy or racing through The Upside Down, she's right where she belongs in Bridgerton.
