Community briefs for northern Brazoria County for 5/11
Alvin High School students receive scholarships from Alvin Community College Foundation April 25. The foundation awarded $77,950 in scholarships to students at area high schools this year.Students from Dawson High School, Pearland Junior High West and Rogers Middle School are set to represent Texas at the 2022 Future Problem Solving Program International Conference June 8-12 in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Dawson students Thomas Liang, Jayden Lu, Jalen Nguyen and Jasmine Wong placed second in the senior division team GIPS competition. Placing third were Jorryn Li, Stephen Mao, Enjia Wang and Raina Zhang. Coaches are: Angela Ruth, Dawson; Lisa Shapiro, PJH West; Elizabeth Myers, PJH East; Lynda Ketterer, Rogers; Cassandra Maldonado and Alex Serrano, Sablatura; and Elesha Alexander, Alexander. Foundation board members, district officials, parents and community partners rode school buses to each campus to surprise recipients and present the grants. Alvin, Manvel and Shadow Creek high school band members, cheerleaders and mascots joined in the celebration. Other early grade winners are: Kanika Bass, Rommie Lynne Gillie and Anita Phipps, Marek Elementary School; Kelly Chatham, Ashley Harper and Karla James, E.C.
