Bosch launches new silicon carbide chips to make EVs more efficient
Share to twitterBosch has developed new microchips made of silicon carbide . They represent a technological leap forward in electromobility. Compared to the silicon chips used to date, SiC semiconductors have better electrical conductivity. This enables higher switching frequencies while also ensuring that much less energy is dissipated in the form of heat.Electric vehicles are already vastly more efficient at converting energy to motion than internal combustion engines.
However, as you scale up to larger, more powerful systems, efficiency becomes crucial and alternating current motors are more efficient than direct current . That’s why all modern EVs use some form of AC motor. The problem is you can’t make a DC battery which is where the power electronics module comes into play. The PEM contains circuitry and chips that convert AC to DC and vice-versa.
