Marina Wheeler gives a virtuoso performance of a dignified, restrained ex wife
In an ideal world, if I said the name “Marina Wheeler”, you’d know that I was talking about the anti-harassment tsar for the Labour Party. Or an author. Or a barrister/KC.
But she’s following the official divorce edict and is glacially polite about her former husband all through the interview with, which is theoretically about Wheeler’s investigation into workplace harassment, but in practice is also about Wheeler’s marriage, ethnicity, experience of ageing and how she felt about her time adjacent to the world of politics.
And for what it’s worth, I do actually believe her when she says that she blocked out much of their marriage – following around a man who seems to cheerfully offend people wherever he goes must have been stressful in the extreme, just as a marital split around the same time she was diagnosed with cancer must have been. I have similar blank spots in my memory about the horrible end of my own marriage. There’s a sort of survival instinct which wipes these things away.
Towards the end of the interview she does make a concession, and admits to enjoying some aspects of being divorced. She tells Hirsch: “I suppose I do feel that, as you become more senior as a woman and, I guess, post-divorce, if I’m honest, it does free you up,” she says, smiling. “You can look at the world again and do things that can make a difference.”
