Harriet Harman, the Labour chair of the privileges committee, has given her opening statements. She defines a contempt - the charge against Mr Johnson - as 'misleading, intentionally or recklessly or refusing to answer or failing to correct'.

Windsor Framework vote taking placeThe Committee has paused for 15 minutes to allow Mr Johnson and other MPs to have their say on Mr Sunak's agreement.Boris Johnson starts by swearing an oath on the bible.

But he says the"purpose of this inquiry is not to reopen the so-called partygate, it is to discover whether or not I lied to Parliament, wittingly misled colleagues and the country about what I knew and believed about those gatherings". He says that the committee is holding back evidence and has"elected only to publish the evidence it considers incriminating".

Ms Harman says that the decisions about COVID and what to do about the pandemic are not what are being looked at. But for the next few hours the former prime minister could be on a sticky wicket as he attempts to convince the seven MPs on the committee that he did - as he claims - act in good faith when he claimed in the House of Commons he was repeatedly assured by his officials that lockdown gatherings in Downing Street were within the rules.

Back in Downing Street, Mr Sunak has insisted he won't be watching the committee, as Mr Johnson prepares for a long innings…The inquiry into whether Boris Johnson intentionally or recklessly misled MPs about the partygate scandal has begun. And Henry Zeffman of The Times shared an article about Labour adviser Jo Moore's saying 9/11 was a"good day to bury bad news".It's not entirely unhelpful for Rishi Sunak that much of the attention this afternoon will be on Boris Johnson.

With a working majority of 66, it would take a rebellion 34 Tory MPs to make Rishi Sunak's life difficult. They were asked by journalists if Rishi Sunak will be watching Mr Johnson's appearance before the privileges committee. And while Mr Johnson is facing a sticky wicket at the committee, Mr Sunak is set to meet the England T20 cricket team, according to Downing Street.
