The 2024 Aye Write festival has been cancelled after a funding bid was refused, with the award-winning Shuggie Bain author among those criticising the decision.
Booker Prize winner Douglas Stuart has lashed out at politicians after the beloved Aye Write festival was scrapped. The Shuggie Bain writer returned to X, formerly Twitter, as it was announced the event series was denied monetary help this year.
"I have watched in horror, as Scotland has haggled over funding for the arts, has closed her libraries, and now has allowed the cancellation of a major literary festival in her largest city. A festival that has a focus on Scottish voices."And while Irish writers are GREAT, it's also clear to me that Ireland understands that culture, people, & literature are her strength and they fund it like they mean it.
He emphasised the importance of working class voices in Scottish literature. Aye Write will not happen this year as a festival after its application for funding from Creative Scotland was unsuccessful.
