Council chiefs say November 5 is 'no longer a night of celebration' in large parts of the city and that in some areas it has been 'hijacked by organised gangs, fly-tipping under the excuse of a community event.'
Liverpool Council staff have been regularly threatened while dismantling dangerous bonfires, with fears community events have been hijacked by criminal gangs.
In each occasion the council staff left the area before returning with a police escort to continue their dismantling work. This is the first year in which the council, fire service and police have combined their resources to tackle the issue. Teams will be travelling together to large bonfire sites to remove waste materials on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of this week.
Liverpool Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods, Cllr Laura Robertson-Collins said: "The sad fact is that November 5 is no longer a night of celebration in large parts of the city.
