A 27-year-old man has been arrested in connection with an alleged disturbance
Bomb squad officers carried out a major operation in a quiet suburb of Glasgow this afternoon, following an alleged disturbance nearby on Thursday evening. Police officers roped off a large area of Malletsheugh Road in Newton Mearns, which has been closed at both ends by police vehicles.
Portaloos have been provided at the site, suggesting officers may be there for some time. It is understood that families have been evacuated from the immediate area and Police Scotland insisted there was "no ongoing threat to the public". She said: “I have been informed homes have been evacuated. I hope the situation is resolved quickly and safely. Our emergency services do an amazing job. They go towards danger when the rest of us would run away.”
Police provided little detail of what was taking place. The area is a mix of residential properties and small businesses. A garage owner in the area claimed he was prevented from attending his workshop by the police blockade.
