Commercial aviation is dominated by the two companies, with airlines and pilots favouring one over the other for a variety of reasons
Pilots train on, and fly, either one or the other – and it will be for a specific aircraft, such as an Airbus A320, or a Boeing 737 – although many retrain to fly both during their career.
“Broadly, if you come if you come out of a pilot training school, you’re going to probably go to one of two companies:The major difference between Boeing and Airbus planes is in the control the pilot has when flying. Airbus was a pioneer of fly-by-wire technology, which changed how the pilot’s directions were communicated to the plane.
“Boeing was more traditional and stuck to the cable technology. It kept that model because it was making lots of money. That was its USP really – sticking to a proven known technology. However, it has introduced fly-by-wire on some of its newer aircraft.” “But of course, there have been accidents – some of them resulting from human error. Boeing has gone further down the electronic technical route since Airbus did, but they’re not at the same level yet.”The cockpit of a Boeing 737 Max, with the yoke in front of each seat
“Increasingly, look very similar in the cockpit. They now both have head up displays, which means that when you’re looking up you can see the instrumentation through your field of vision so you don’t have to look down, and that can help you with landing in bad weather. Often it comes down to personal preference.”Airbus’s fly-by-wire technology means that it has tended to produce lighter, more fuel-efficient aircraft.
