The New Jersey senator who was indicted on corruption and bribery charges last week proclaimed his innocence at a press conference Monday
“participating in a years-long bribery scheme,” on Friday by prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. Authorities allege that the couple “accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars of bribes from [Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes] in exchange for Menendez’s agreement to use his official position to protect and enrich them and to benefit the Government of Egypt.
Schumer also provided a tepid defense for the senator, writing that “Bob Menendez has been a dedicated public servant and is always fighting hard for the people of New Jersey. He has a right to due process and a fair trial.” However, not all the members of the upper chamber feel that Menedez should remain in office. Sen. John Fetterman called for
on Saturday, writing that while his colleague is entitled to the presumption of innocence “he cannot continue to wield influence over national policy, especially given the serious and specific nature of the allegations.”
