Blade Runner features a Replicant owl, and in one comic book continuation of the franchise, that owl is revealed to have a shocking secret meaning.
In the future landscape of Blade Runner, most animals have gone extinct due to the harsh conditions of a polluted Earth, meaning almost every pet owned by someone is actually a Replicant. The most famous of these Replicant animals has to be Tyrell’s owl, which was featured in the first Blade Runner film. While fans may be familiar with the owl itself, they may not know about its shocking secret meeting.
Replicants are artificial life forms originally created by the Tyrell Corporation. Replicants were created to act as slave labor for humanity’s off-world outposts, working jobs deemed too dangerous for humans. Contrary to popular belief, Replicants aren’t actually androids, but are more akin to clones in that their bones, organs, and life functions are the same as a human, they’re just grown in a lab. Not only does this make them not androids, but it also means Replicants are self-aware.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Blade Runner’s Replicant Owl is a Declaration of Tyrell’s Success In Blade Runner 2029 by Mike Johnson and Andres Guinaldo, readers are thrown into the world of Blade Runner seven years after the Blackout that wiped nearly every trace of memory saved within humanity’s archives, effectively wiping the slate clean for everyone alive–including Replicants.
All Replicants are given false memories to make them seem/feel more human, and one of the Replicants in this comic was granted the memories of Tyrell himself. Within those memories, readers are shown Tyrell burying the body of his dead pet owl as a child, which is what made him consider the possibility of eternal life for non-organic creatures, which Tyrell decided he would create.
This added detail to one of the most memorable aspects of the original Blade Runner is an absolute treat for fans since it gives the visually striking–yet otherwise trivial–scene the in-canon importance it deserves, as Blade Runner’s Replicant owl has a shocking secret meaning that holds significance with every Replicant in the franchise.
