If you think you know the Blackpool Illuminations, think again 🤓
Dubbed 'the greatest free light show on earth', with six miles of colourful festoons, tableaux and features - they're enjoyed by millions every year. But Blackpool has long been associated with light and electricity - having been one of the first towns to get electric street lighting back in 1879 when eight arc lamps were erected on the Promenade.
This year the lights were switched on by designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen on Friday, September 2. They'll be shining for four months, including over Christmas, and will be turned off on January 2, 2023 at 10.30pm.As well as the lights, the Blackpool Tower projections will run over the same dates, tranforming the iconic landmark into a 'sea of light, colour and sound'.
There are lots of interesting facts about Blackpool Illuminations, including that ex-displays have been sold to countries all over the world, including Barcelona and Saudi Arabia! If you can't see the quiz, please click here.
