Researcher Darren Byler said foreign governments buying this tech must recognize it's not only been funded by Uighur oppression but literally been built out from it. "It is important that governments around the world understand that behind the COVID-19 surveillance tools that they buy from these companies are millions of Uighurs who provided the data on which aspects of these products were built. If such governments do indeed stand for human rights protections, they should refuse to use tools produced through human rights abuse," said Byler.
To Woodhams, this highlights an urgent need for governments to crack down on the surveillance sector. "COVID-19 has exacerbated the need for meaningful regulation of the private surveillance industry. Without this, companies with poor human rights records will continue to grow in size and influence, putting citizens' fundamental rights at ever greater risk," he said.
