In 2019, the department received 20,857 applications, followed by 10,181 when the COVID pandemic hit in 2020 and 9,270 in 2022. The Sheriff’s Department did not accept deputy applications in 2021 due to the pandemic. While it “bothers me a little,” Pereyra said, it has not changed his mind about trying to become a cop. “I know it could be hard. I hear a lot of things in the news, but I try not to get discouraged by those things,” he said.
